Dr. Stephanie Hassel McNeil
Some of my earliest inspirational memories are of my paternal grandmother’s rich, amazing stories of her nursing career. It is impossible to separate her everyday existence from her nursing life as they were so deeply interwoven. Her clinical skills were as valued as the baby booties she crocheted after a long day’s work. Doctors and nurses in her life were not coworkers, but also friends. Friends were family. Her life informed my understanding of community service and fellowship. She passed this sense of service to her three children.
My father’s stories of his service as a medic during the Vietnam War featured harrowing experiences, and clinical challenges, but also personal connections in a unique community. Throughout his Air Force career as a Registered Nurse, and ultimately, a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner this remained a recurring theme.
This generational legacy infuses my perspective and ignites my passion. It explains my approach to medical care- an effort to utilize the strengths of a village to support each member.
I am a proud Air Force wife, daughter, sister and aunt. I am forever grateful for the service and sacrifice of my families and all military families who continue to protect freedoms that we often take for granted. The military life has afforded me opportunities to experience service, connection and new definitions of community.
Although separated from our roots in the United States Virgin Islands, my extended family ensured a strong connection to our own rich history. From this grounding springs a desire to learn more about the history and legacies of others. It fuels a deep appreciation and respect for the unique threads that compose this American life.
